Join us for Tee Off for Doc, a fun-filled community event featuring mini golf, sports & Maine themed trivia, live music by Hello Newman, raffles, local prizes, and a great night out with family or friends.

Built around some of Doc’s favorite things, this evening is designed to bring people together for a lot of fun, while celebrating and supporting Doc following his recent kidney transplant.

Many in our community may know of Doc’s wife, Katie Zarrilli, through her storytelling on Instagram & Facebook, relatable Maine content, and perhaps most locally recognizable as the woman behind the 16 counties – one woman show reels! Real Maine Mom was also thrilled to recently feature Katie as the special guest emcee at the 2026 Kids’ Pick Awards.

Voting takes place during the month of February, recognizing the local businesses & organizations making a meaningful impact on childhood in and around Greater Portland, Maine. Since 2024, we have been revealing the winners at the Kids’ Pick Awards event, an evening that is made possible by the community featuring music, food, connection, and the official awards presentation.

This event, organized by Real Maine Mom, is put on by the community for the community in celebration of the local businesses that make Maine such a great place to raise a family. Anyone is welcome to attend in support of local, kid-friendly businesses and organizations.

2026 Special Guest Host

We were so thrilled to welcome Katie Zarrilli as this year’s event emcee. A Maine-based storyteller and creator, Katie is best known for her “16 Counties” series, where she brings Maine’s unique personalities to life with humor and heart. Her work celebrates the people, places, and quirks that make Maine so special, making her the perfect fit to lead a night all about community. Needless to say, Katie knocked it out of the park and is welcome back anytime.

Live Music

We were honored to feature the Old Port Jazz Society instrumental duo, along with pianist Kate Metzler, at the 2026 Awards Reception. This marked Kate’s second year performing at the Kids’ Pick Awards.

Local Causes/ Event Fundraiser

The 2026 Kids’ Pick Awards supported two local causes.

The Center for Grieving Children provides a safe space, compassionate peer support, outreach, and education for grieving children, teens, young adults, families, and the broader community.

  • Real Maine Mom selected the The Center for Grieving Children as the beneficiary of the 2026 Kids’ Pick Awards silent auction fundraiser. Representatives from this cause were in attendance to accept funds directly.

317 Main Community Music Center is a nonprofit organization in Yarmouth, Maine, with a mission to encourage creative expression, personal growth, and community connection through music. It focuses on making music education accessible to all ages and abilities, aiming to build community, foster joy, and strengthen social connection.

A Local Parent’s Take on Two Popular Summer Spots

Comparing Auaboggan Waterpark and Funtown Splashtown, USA from the perspective of moms with littles.

If you live in Southern Maine, chances are you have been asked or have asked yourself which waterpark is better: Aquaboggan Waterpark or Funtown Splashtown USA. The short answer? They are not apples to apples. Each has its own perks, drawbacks, and “sweet spot” depending on your kids’ ages, heights, and personalities. Here is my breakdown after years of visiting both.

When Funtown Splashtown USA Shines

If you have one or more kids under 48 inches tall, especially under 38 inches (free admission), Funtown can be a great fit, especially if you are a season ticket holder or might potentially become one.

Here is why: daily tickets are pricey, and for toddler parents who often only stay a few hours before nap time, it is hard to justify. The exception is if you plan to upgrade to a season pass, which you can do within 7 days of your visit by saving your bracelet and receipt. I cannot begin to tell you how many families with similarly aged children I have converted to season ticket holders after just one visit, upgrading their tickets on the spot. And no, I do not work for Funtown and this is not an ad.

I have been purchasing a season pass at Funtown every year since my oldest was 3. What I’ve loved about it up til this point is that both kids have been able to enjoy the kiddie rides together, and those rides are genuinely fun all the way up to that 48 inch mark. If you have just one kid, or a baby in tow, you can still go and have fun because kids can ride almost all of the kiddie rides without you. Once they pass 48 inches, the ride options narrow if they are not into the big thrill rides yet. Speaking from experience, my mama heart still needs time before I am ready to see them on some of those big thrill rides they are technically tall enough to ride.

Even if you are only thinking waterpark initially, the amusement park side of Funtown is a huge bonus for families with littles. There are loads of toddler-specific rides that are perfect for kids under 48 inches, and our routine is usually to spend an hour enjoying those rides before heading over to Splashtown to cool off until it is time to leave for nap.

Cost Considerations:

Daily tickets are pricey, which can feel hard to justify for toddler parents who often head home for naps after just a couple of hours. The park opens at 10:30 a.m., so if you are only there for a short morning it is tricky. In 2025, there is a 3:00 p.m. ticket discount that makes an afternoon visit more affordable.

Waterpark Experience:

Splashtown’s water playground is big, powerful, and exciting, perfect for kids who love the water as they will get very wet. But visibility can be tough and you may lose sight of your child unless you are right there with them. The good news is the area is contained with one exit, but I still find myself joining in the fun rather than watching from the sidelines more often than not.

Pro Tip:

Wear a ball cap you do not mind getting wet on the Splashtown water playground. Buckets of water get dumped on your head regularly, but the hat will prevent much of the water from going over your eyes allowing you to have a better chance of keeping up with your kids, who will be seemingly unaffected by it.

Other highlights include the basic pool – people on local moms groups are always asking about local outdoor pools they can visit and I always feel like I have the secret pool access! On hot days I am definitely glad to be in there. And one thing I have to mention: this park is very clean. If your mental image of waterparks leans toward grimy, this place will change that.

When Aquaboggan is the Better Pick

Just down the road from Funtown, Aquaboggan is a larger waterpark that also offers go-karts, mini golf, and even a drive-in movie theater.

Cost Considerations:

Daily rates are generally more affordable, making it a practical one-day trip. Admission for kids under 38 inches is just $6, and adults can buy a pool-only pass if they are not riding slides.

Toddler-Friendly Setup:

The toddler splash area is gentle and approachable, ideal for little ones who are still unsure about the water. It is small enough that many parents can sit and watch their kids play. But adventurous water-lovers may lose interest quickly and head for the wave pool, which is fun but requires active supervision. Unlike the water playground at Splashtown, your school-aged kid likely won’t want to play here long.

Managing Multiple Ages:

This park works best if you are visiting with either all littles or all bigger kids. Mixing toddlers and older kids can be tough without enough adults to divide and conquer. The toddler splash area is right next to a shallow pool that bigger kids love, but if your toddler sees a sibling in there, they will probably want to join, which often means you are getting in too.

Where My Family is Now

With my oldest crossing the 48 inch mark next summer and my youngest still below it, we are taking a break from Funtown season passes. The draw for us would now mostly be the water playground, and if we are going for water fun, we will probably opt for Aquaboggan season passes instead.

The tipping point for many families is when both kids are confident in the wave pool and you do not mind joining them or when they are ready for the bigger slides. Until then, a couple of day trips to either park might be enough.

We also stick to mid-week visits. If weekends were our only option, we would probably go far less often to either park.

Bottom line:

Can you really go wrong wuth either waterpark? Not in my opinion. Each of the truly do have something for everyone. How fortunate are we to have 2 excellent options like this right in our backyard? I just try my best not to take them for granted.

We recently had the chance to stay at The Perfect Pair, one of several thoughtfully managed properties listed on CampfireBooking.com, and it completely lived up to the name. From booking to beach days, everything felt seamless, personal, and well-cared for. Exactly the kind of experience you hope for when planning a memory-making trip with your kids.

More Than a Rental, a Thoughtful Local Experience

What immediately stood out to me was the level of care and attention provided by Mandy and Ashley, the local women behind Campfire Booking. As lifelong Mainers with family homes on Sebago themselves, they’ve created something that goes beyond simply renting out beautiful spaces. They’ve built a service that reflects local insight, hospitality, and heart.

Before our trip even began, we received a detailed digital Welcome Book that set clear expectations and included helpful tips about the property, nearby attractions, favorite local spots, and more. It was incredibly well done. A mix of warmth and professionalism that helped us arrive prepared, feeling ready to settle in and enjoy.

Their transparency, responsiveness, and organization were truly standout. Mandy and Ashley were helpful at every turn, and it was obvious that they’ve poured their energy into making these rentals feel like a true home away from home.

The Property: The Perfect Pair

What makes The Perfect Pair unique is that it includes not just one, but two separate homes. Located on highly sought after Wards Cove, this property is a rare gem for large families or multiple groups traveling together. Altogether, the property sleeps up to 16 guests.

The Main House

Set slightly back from the shoreline, the Main House is newer, beautifully maintained, and incredibly comfortable. It feels fresh and open, thoughtfully designed for families who want space to spread out and unwind. This is where we chose to stay thanks to its modern feel and roomy layout that worked well for our family of four. You can tell every detail was considered, from the layout to the furnishings. It featured a beautiful patio with a gas grill for our cooking convenience.

This house has 2 very spacious bedrooms. The kids bedroom offered plenty of room for us to set up our full pack n’ play with Slumberpod that we use for my toddler and bunkbeds that worked perfectly for my older child. This room would also sleep multiple adults comfortably. Just outside the door was a full bath with a tub/shower combo, perfect for the kids. The master bedroom featured a master bath, also with a tub/shower combo and plenty of space (even an extra bed in the corner) to sleep additional children if needed. Plenty of room to set up a pack n’ play in this room as well – this is something I am always looking for. The only thing I will say from an accessibility standpoint is that all bedrooms and bathrooms are located upstairs on the 2nd floor. While this was not an issue for our family, it could be a challenge for others that have challenges using the stairs.

The Lakefront Cabin

Located even closer to the water’s edge is the smaller beach cabin that you also get when you rent this property. This cabin is packed with charm & beachside convenience. It has a large deck with a propane grill, large table and unobstructed sunset views. This is truly one of the best spots on the property to relax at the end of the day. Inside, it’s cozy and inviting, and offers an updated kitchen & bathroom on the first floor. On the second floor there is a loft-style sleeping area that’s perfect for kids, with 2 twin beds and 2 full size beds. I envision kids or teens totally getting a kick out of this space!

Together, the two homes offer the best of both worlds. You get space and privacy, plus shared outdoor areas where everyone can come together for meals, games, a campfire, swimming, or just relaxing by the lake.

Fun on the Water

One of the absolute highlights of our stay was the private sandy beach & dock. The water here is unbelievably clear, with the cleanest sandy bottom I’ve ever seen in lake water – and absolutely no need for the water shoes we had packed. It felt really fun, safe and accessible for our kids.

Guests have access to three kayaks and two stand-up paddleboards, which made it so easy to explore the calm protected cove. It is an ideal spot for families new to paddling or just looking for a peaceful place to float. The dock allows for daytime boat access, and there is even a mooring available overnight if you are bringing your own boat.

Set right on the beach is a cozy fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs, perfect for roasting marshmallows at sunset or just relaxing with your feet in the sand. You can start the morning with your coffee on the bench at the end of the private dock, or end the day jumping into the water as the sun sets. Every detail felt easy and inviting, giving us all the reasons to stay outside from sunup to sundown.

Why We’ll Book Local Again

There’s something deeply comforting about knowing who you’re renting from. You’re not at the mercy of a corporate platform or anonymous host. The Best Splash Pads & Cool-Off Spots for Littles

Whether you’re chasing shade or on the hunt for the perfect splash zone, these kid-friendly cool-off spots are probably what you are looking for when summer in Maine really heats up! Best for toddlers and preschoolers – but always enjoy at your own risk. Most locations are unsupervised, so parental discretion is key, and in our opinion this is especially true when you are participating in activities around water.
