These gift ideas can be for any occasion, however, as I write this post, Christmas is less than a week away.
Many of us do as much of our shopping online as we can these days for the convenience and to avoid the large crowds at the big box stores, but it is at this point in the season when we realize we may be cutting it too close to shop online and receive our items on time. If you ask me it is the perfect opportunity to support local businesses and shop local.
For my readers who are located in Maine, I am sharing my go-to local businesses that offer some last minute (or anytime really) gift options with some gift options for people near and far. For those readers from away, I hope this gives you some inspiration to shop locally in your own area.
Len Libby’s Candies
Len Libby’s has been a favorite spot of mine since I was a kid and went special to get the needham ice cream. It has definitely been one of my go-tos for holiday gifts the last couple of years too. Buy Maine needham candies, specialty chocolates in all shapes and sizes including candy skis and snow shovels, handmade candy canes, lobster shaped lollipops, chocolate drizzled caramel corn (sprinkled with peppermint for Christmas), Chocolate dipped oreos (also sprinkled with peppermint for Christmas) AND SO MUCH MORE!
Local Craft Beer or Gift Cards
So many to choose from in this category in Maine, but my top picks include:
- Allagash Brewery in Portland
- Nonesuch River Brewery in Scarborough
- Maine Beer Company in Freeport
- Baxter Brewing in Lewiston
Additionally, you can enjoy your visit at each of these locations when you go to pick up your beer or gift cards.
Wicked Whoopies
There are plenty of whoopies to choose from in Maine, but the whoopie pies at Wicked Whoopies in Freeport are still my favorite. Gift a variety of mini whoopies as an affordable (when you buy in store) and unique gift.
Local Coffee Gift Cards
Instead of Dunkin or Starbucks try a local coffee shop like:
- The Maine Bagel in Scarborough, serving up local Wicked Joe Coffee and the best bagels around made fresh in house each day.
- Bard Coffee in Portland with beans roasted in house. A friend who knows a whole lot about coffee told me this is THE place to go in Portland.
- Omi’s Coffee Shop in South Portland with locally roasted beans and awesome and unique baked goods, including but not limited to a homemade pop-tart pastry.
- Forage Market in Portland and Lewiston.
Suburban Home Outfitters
This is my favorite local store for home decor and it has tons of cute gift ideas for every price, personality and hobby. Many products are made right here in Maine too. Suburban Home Outfitters is located on Route 1 in Scarborough.
Portland Dine Around Club
An amazing punch card/ coupon program that will get you (or whomever you gift it to) to try new places and save money at some of their favorite establishments too. Several restaurants participate outside of Portland as well, check out the complete list or purchase a membership on the Portland Dine Around Club website.
Lisa Marie’s Made in Maine
Lisa Marie’s is my favorite touristy store, right in the Old Port in Portland. I buy most of my greeting cards here, and also swing by when I am looking for the perfect “Maine” gift. They also have a location in Bath.
Edgecomb Potters
I LOVE the pottery at Edgecomb Potters, so many useful pieces. This is a great place to shop if you are looking for the perfect gift. Great for wedding gifts too! We received a beautiful serving dish from here for our wedding and this was without the person even knowing this was one of my favorite stores! Located in the Old Port in Portland.
Local Ski Mountains
For the adventurous ones you may find luck purchasing Lift Tickets or Gift Cards to local mountains. Skiing is an expensive sport, so any help to those who do not have a season pass on the slopes at their favorite hill will most likely be more than welcomed and might get them out skiing or snowboarding more than they would have otherwise. My favorites are Sugarloaf and Sunday River, but it really depends on who you are gifting to. There are also some options like Shawnee Peak, Lost Valley and Mt. Abram that have a lot to offer for families.
Salon Gift Certificates
Especially for a lady in your life, you can’t go wrong with a gift certificate to their favorite hair or nail salon.
Maine State Park Annual Passes
If you know someone who loves to get outdoors and explore the beauty that the state of Maine has offer, now is the perfect time to purchase annual State Park Passes because even if they usually do purchase them, chances are they haven’t got around to it yet.
Restaurants & Other Food Establishment Gift Certificates
The options for local food establishments are endless. There are so many great local restaurants to choose from. Some of my favorite spots include:
- O’Reilly’s Cure in Scarborough
- Romeo’s Sports Bar in Scarborough, Yarmouth and Topsham
- Benkay Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar in Portland
- Bingas Wingas in Portland, Yarmouth and Windham
- Ricetta’s Italian Restaurant in Falmouth and Saco
- Bucks Naked BBQ in Freeport and Windham
- Eventide Oysters in Portland (and Boston)
- Duckfat in Portland
